Measure Of A Man

measure of a man
laugh and cry the same day
be strong, yet lean on another
show and be shown
teach and learn
pray and be prayed for
stand up when called, then sit down to dinner
love your own and love a stranger
care and be cared for
and be there to be measured

"Pretty Girls Don't Cry" -- Chris Isaak

This song played randomly on my player the other day. Now, it's stuck in my head and I keep going back to it.

"Pretty Girls Don't Cry"

pretty girls don't cry, they know exactly what they want
pretty girls walk by, with eyes that smile faces that haunt
I watch them walk I wonder, turn away I try
but I can't find words to say I know
that you don't love me but I'm watching you

pretty girls don't cry, they know exactly what to do
pretty girls walk by, but they won't ever smile at you
I watch them walk I wonder, turn away I try
but I can't find words to say I know
that you don't love me but I'm watching you

pretty girls don't cry, they know exactly what they want
I watch them walk I wonder, turn away I try
but I can't find words to say I know
you've heard it all before but I'm watching you...
I'm watching you.
I'm watching you...

My Stolen, Borrowed, and Lifted Fitness Philosophy

I will keep this little list as up to date as I can.

The goal is to give you a look into the fitness philosophy of Roland (me). What's important to me (Roland...), in regards to health, weight/fat loss, etc.

Expect lots of links to great articles and mere snippets of info from me. I'll let the real experts do the convincing, and just point you in their direction.

1. The Big Calcium "Problem"
2. Does each food that you eat need to be 'balanced?"
3. Coming, someday...

The Big Calcium "Problem"

The other day, came across a "calcium intake tracking" form. It was torn out of a magazine. In short, it was an advertisement for some fitness drink that now has added calcium. Propel, I think. I don't think calcium is bad. Go ahead and try to get more of it. But, taking more in is like spraying the edges of the fire and not bothering to turn off the gas line that's feeding it. You're just holding it back. Turn off the gas!

Most of us get all the calcium we need. Then we eat the wrong foods (acids) and force our bodies to release the phosphorus (base) from our bones and muscle tissue to balance things out so we don't die of blood acidosis. Then, the resulting calcium gets flushed down the toilet in our urine.

Covering Nutritional Bases: The Importance of Acid-Base Balance

The article covers the particulars of the Acid/Base balance issue. Get ready to eat more veggies and less starchy carbs. Or, if you insist on the starchies, eat up those veggies x 2 and don't stop.

For more info on this and all sorts of other important dietary issues, check out the highly recommended "The Paleo Diet For Athletes." It's a lot like the Paleo Diet, but the good Dr. seems to have lightened up a bit. Plus, he tells you what you can do to go ahead and eat those starchy carbs that the cavemen never had a chance to eat (it's called exercise). A great book, for this and all other sources of dietary info.

Acid/Base Calculator -- difficult to use, but interesting to check out the different foods.

Excess Dietary Protein Can Adversely Affect Bone -- Another study/abstract. From The Journal Of Nutrition. Eating a lot of protein? I am. Even more reason to eat those veggies.

The Day After

For those of you who remember that far back, "The Day After" was a movie about nuclear war. Mostly about what happens afterward.

For many of us, Thanksgiving was a dietary war, that we likely lost, to some degree. Today is our Day After.

However, rather than merely survive the aftermath, I mean to pick up where I left off on Wednesday. Back to working out, back to healthy eating, and thankful for my day with the family, yesterday.

In the movie, "The Day After," they show the futility of nuclear war. Life, in general, is pretty much over. What's left is a horrible existance, filled with violence, death, and suffering.

My Day After looks back at the lessons of yesterday:

Food is good, but it can be overdone. Obviously, we know this. But, I'd forgotten how uncomfortably full I can get! Thankfully, it was on far less food than I might have eaten in past years. Ah, the glory of Thanksgiving, 1992 (22lb turkey, guests called in sick...).

Not all old people are hard of hearing.

Not only that, some old people are in better shape than people years younger (when asked her secret (the oldster), she said "I eat normal food and exercise." Wise words...

I like my family.

My kids are very polite, even when faced with strange questions from old people. My 8 year old son, the walking encyclopedia of animal facts, didn't even correct the oldster when she claimed that woodpeckers are boring holes to store their acorns. He merely nodded.

That's about it.

You might think it ironic that "TheDay After" is on SciFi tonight. There's no irony here. That's what gave me the idea for my post. 8pm PST, here in Torrance, CA. Check it out, if you want to go to bed depressed. Go for "Alien Nation," instead. It's on channel FMC, whatever that is...

A 'Duh' Revelation

I took a little walk, down in Redondo Beach. When I got hungry, I stopped at Casa Playa for lunch.

Question. In who's world is a soft taco and a bowl of soup, a splurge? Why did I feel like I was splurging?

It's the special. Albondigas soup and a carnitas soft taco. I'm kinda feeling guilty about ordering it. Plus, two things bother me. 1. Is it healthy? 2. Will it be enough? Should I get an extra taco? Obviously, my priorities lean in one direction...

I just get it. It's the special, so they must think it's enough for somebody, right? Plus, the cute girl looks confused that I can't make up my mind. She's furling her brow. I don't want to be responsible for a crow's foot or anything. I order it, grab cups of the hottest salsa at the salsa bar, and sit.

The food's good. Brothy soup with two meatballs. An excellent taco. Good salsa (not as hot as the warning merits, though). The diet coke is the best ever. It was just filling enough.

This is my revelation: For millions of years, people have eaten less-than-optimal food and stayed lean by eating normal amounts of food.

How long has it taken me to figure out what a normal amount is? Looks like about four years.

Thirty six years of eating wrong can be relearned. It takes time. For the stomach to shrink? Perhaps. For the mind to adjust. Certainly. As my example, above, illustrated. I'm not even fully there. I'm getting there.

My Son, The Handyman

My son replaced the bathroom doorknob, all by himself. Just a screwdriver and no directions.

Speaking of gobblas (er, gobblers)

I bought a 22 pound bird, just for me. It's thawing in the cooler, now.

Vons had a special. Buy $25 in groceries and get a bird over 16lbs for $7. I got the biggest one.

I love turkey.

Albino's First Shedding

You remember Albino, I hope? Tony's corn snake? He shed his first full skin, this weekend.

18" long. It's pretty cool.

Tony's very excited!

For my friend, Tony.

This is for you, gobbla.
