The peanut wars

There is a silent war going on behind the closed and perpetrator's-height marked doors of the convenience stores. Peanut used to come in 1oz packets. A reasonable serving size, I think.

A couple of years ago, one vendor bumped it up to 1.25 ounces and took the lead. Another bumped it to 1.33. Then it was 1.5 ounces.

For the last few years, it's been 1.75 oz per package. Until now.

Now, for the low price of 59¢ -- or two for a dollar -- you can have 1.8 ounces of peanuts.

...and 330 calories.

Did you know that a normally suggested serving of peanuts is one ounce, and about 180 calories?

Yes, I know I can save the other .8 ounces for tomorrow.

Is fast food healthier than the farmers market?

I contend that it's harder to find a healthy lunch at the Farmers Market than it is to find one at a fast food joint. We think of all the amazing produce, pastured milk, raw nuts, and grass fed beef that we can find when we go there to shop, but it's a challenge to find anything remotely healthy on the "lunch" side of the place.

There are no salads. There are no vegetables that weren't fried directly or stirred into fried rice or pan fried noodles. The signs proudly proclaim the use of soybean oil or just "no lard."

I ended up buying two Thai chicken sticks, plus some tomatoes and cucumbers (which I had to wash in the park's water fountain).

These were delicious -- a little sweet, but in the grand scheme of things...  I'll have to get some fat elsewhere. I should have thought to pick up an avocado!

I don't believe that the quality of foods at traditional fast food places is tip top, but I must admit that I can find a salad at McDonald's. At Carl's Jr, you can find a grilled chicken breast sandwich if that's your thing. You can get bunless burgers anywhere.

The options at the Farmers Market are not only misleading people (by their mere presence at the Farmers Market) into thinking that they are healthy, but there are fewer healthy choices at the Farmers Market. Period.

Unless you make and pack your own lunch, you're probably not eating optimally, but please don't think it's better because you bought it next to someone who's selling organic produce.

The saddest song EVER -- Leaving on a jet plane

Over at JPFitness, there's a discussion of the depressing songs EVER. JPFitness -- The most depressing song ever.  There are songs on the list that I love, and songs that I don't. I love this song, even though it makes me sad. This song has a direct line to my heart, and produces the same feeling that modern day air travel security restrictions do regarding goodbyes.

The days of saying goodbye at the gate are long gone; it's not longer safe to allow so much sadness so near the gate. Now, people say goodbye at the conga line of security.

You know that feeling? The one where each party needs to decide what to do for themselves after that final touch goodbye? Do I continue to look back for her as I inch closer to the x-ray machine and pat down station? Do I leave now and head to the car? How long do I stay at the airport? Is my parking edging into the next 30 minutes and another $5?

I don't even live close to the airport, but the last time I secretly waited until she was through security to go home and I was still at my house before her plane was even scheduled to take off. It seemed wrong to go home, and wrong to be in the house.  ...and if someone at home had asked if she got off okay, I would have broken down, knowing that she was probably still finding her seat on the plane!

You know that feeling?
